A former cop, T.M. Pryor, escapes from a Louisiana prison where he's serving a six-year sentence for killing his wife's lover. He's desperate to be at his son's hospital bedside, as the nine-year-old was injured in an automobile accident in Los Angeles and is in critical condition. Pryor avoids tracking teams and makes his way to the highway, where he hitches a ride to the nearest town. He breaks into a sporting goods store, takes firearms and ammo, and starts his journey to Los Angeles, carjacking people and taking hostages along the way. Meanwhile, a tracking specialist, Inspector Markley, is assigned to Pryor's case and starts a pursuit in Texas, believing Pryor might be heading that way to reach California.
