Fletch, a debt-ridden LA reporter, inherits a Louisiana plantation estate from his aunt, quits his job, and moves east to live the high life. However, he finds the estate in disrepair, with a shifty caretaker instead of reliable staff. After celebrating with a lawyer, he wakes up to find her murdered and himself accused of the crime. Despite being warned to leave town, Fletch teams up with a real estate agent to uncover the truth, which leads them to suspect a local magnate and his circle of friends, including a TV preacher and a dodgy chemical plant.
