In the midst of a devastating war in 1944 Italy, a five-year-old orphan named Gino, who has been surviving on his own for months, is rescued by two Canadian soldiers who find him on a dark night. Against the odds, they decide to risk everything to nurse him back to health, eventually transforming him into a well-cared-for child who is given a uniform and becomes part of their loving family.
