Walt Kowalski, a Korean War veteran, is a grumpy and unhappy old man who struggles to connect with his family and neighbors in his changing Michigan neighborhood. He's particularly fond of his 1972 Gran Torino, which he keeps in perfect condition. When his neighbor Thao Lor, a young Hmong teenager, tries to steal his prized possession, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Despite initial reluctance, Kowalski becomes drawn into Thao's family life and takes steps to protect them from the gangs that plague their neighborhood.
