In British India, Gunga Din, a young Indian, dreams of joining the British army, but Indians are not allowed. He observes the British and learns their ways, befriending Sgt. Archibald Cutter. Gunga warns Sgt. Cutter about a Thuggee uprising, helping the British fend off the attack. However, Gunga is regarded as a traitor by his countrymen and is captured along with Cutter and two other sergeants by the Thuggees, who seek to force the British to leave India.
