Gene Autry returns to his hometown to help his friend's wayward son, Tex, who's struggling with gambling and drinking. Gene teams up with a photographer and reporter to keep an eye on Tex, but things take a turn when the reporter wins a large sum of gold and a fugitive Chicago racketeer shows up in town. During a celebration, the reporter is killed and Tex is accused of murder, but Gene suspects the real killer is hiding in plain sight.
