Gene Autry, a cattle rancher, is discovered by a Hollywood talent scout, Sue Warner, who wants to sign him to a contract. However, Gene is unaware that the studio only wants to use his voice in an animated cartoon. After a series of misunderstandings, Gene and Sue eventually sign a contract for him to star in a musical western, but first he must stop a cattle stampede and a gang of rustlers trying to blow up his ranch dam.
