In Changi prison, Allied P.O.W.s, mostly British, were held captive by the Japanese after Singapore's surrender in 1942. The camp had no walls or fences as there was no escape route. Among the prisoners was American Corporal King, who had adapted to camp life by trading with the Japanese and living comfortably. His nemesis was Lieutenant Robin Grey, who tried to maintain order and discipline. King's friendship with Lieutenant Peter Marlowe, a British officer, highlights the class system's hypocrisy and King's precarious position in Changi's social hierarchy.
