Sir John Standing is a renowned English actor, born on August 16, 1934, in London, to a family of actors. He is the 4th baronet, succeeding his father Sir Ronald Leon in 1964. Standing comes from a distinguished acting dynasty, with his great-grandfather Herbert Standing, grandfather Sir Guy Standing, and mother, the actress Kay Hammond.
Standing began his acting career as a student at Millfield Preparatory School and Eton College. He made his stage debut in the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company's production of "Titus Andronicus." He then worked on the London stage for two decades, performing in numerous productions, including "The Darling Buds," "The Irregular Verb to Love," "See How They Run," and "The Importance of Being Earnest."
Standing has also had a successful film career, appearing in over 50 films, including "A Pair of Briefs," "Young and Willing," "King Rat," "The Psychopath," "The Eagle Has Landed," "The Elephant Man," "Chaplin," "Mrs Dalloway," and "8 ½ Women."
In addition to his stage and screen work, Standing has had a prolific television career, appearing in numerous British and American TV series and mini-series, including "The First Churchills," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "Windmills of the Gods," "The Choir," "Club V.R.," and "Drovers' Gold." He has also had guest roles on popular TV shows such as "L.A. Law," "Civil Wars," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Game of Thrones."
Standing has been married twice, first to actress Jill Melford and then to actress Sarah Forbes, the daughter of director Bryan Forbes and actress Nanette Newman.
