At the turn of the 20th century, Marie and her husband, renowned painter P.S. Krøyer, are Denmark's most admired couple. They live a life of luxury, with Marie being considered the most beautiful woman in Europe. However, beneath the surface, Krøyer struggles with manic depression and syphilis, causing him to alternate between being cheerful and violent. Marie, exhausted from maintaining appearances, decides to leave with their daughter for Italy, where she meets Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén and finds herself torn between a new life and her love for her family.
