Frank, a PhD dropout, seeks solace with a prostitute named Ruby after his girlfriend cheats on him with his boss. His friend Jack, a drifter, helps him, but things take a dark turn when Ruby is killed and Frank is left unconscious. Jack convinces Frank to flee to California's Sierra region, where they encounter a cast of eccentric characters as they try to uncover Ruby's connection to Jack.
