The Emperor Franz Joseph is on his way to his summer residence at Ischl, where his birthday will be celebrated with a big party. His mother, Archduchess Sophie, has arranged for him to marry her niece Princess Helene of Bayern, and the engagement is to be announced at the ball. However, Franz Joseph's life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Princess Elisabeth, or Sissi, who is a free spirit and the opposite of what his mother had planned. Despite being locked in her room, Sissi escapes and meets Franz Joseph while he's out for a ride, and he's immediately smitten. When he discovers her true identity at the ball, he defies his mother and chooses Sissi as his bride, making her the new Empress of Austria.
