Private detective Edward Mercer is sent to Venice by a French insurance company to locate a brave Italian who helped rescue an Allied airman during the war. However, Mercer soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, as his first contact is found dead and he is pursued by both the police and a group of foreign patriots who want to use him to facilitate a Coup d'Etat.
