A lonely drifter, Benny, is forced to leave a train after cheating at cards and finds himself in the life of Tanya, a bartender. Tanya is struggling to support her husband, a former ballplayer, after his accident and is waiting for an insurance settlement to resolve their financial issues. However, her husband refuses to share the settlement, claiming that money is evil. Benny and Tanya team up to devise a plan to get their hands on the settlement, with Benny concocting a scheme to create a miracle at a local Catholic mission, hoping to prompt the husband to release the funds.
