Katri Walenska, a 15-year-old Polish girl, takes a bold and unauthorized leap into the United States by jumping off a ship and swimming to safety, prompting a search by US Immigration authorities.

Katri, a 15-year-old Polish girl, jumps ship and enters the US illegally. With only a $10 bill and a letter to her parents' old friend, Jan Poldi, a former opera star, she finds him in a Greenwich Village apartment. She meets three Broadway hopefuls, including a pop singer, a dancer, and a talented dog. When Terry, the pop singer, discovers Katri's amazing voice, she helps her get an audition on Don Wilson's TV show. Katri wins, but unwittingly reveals her true identity as an illegal alien, leading to the arrest of Poldi, Wilson, and Terry's boyfriend. Now, Katri faces deportation.
