In early 20th century California, two men, Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday, have their lives intertwined. Daniel, a ruthless oilman, will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, using and exploiting those around him. He's fiercely protective of his business partner, H.W., whom he "acquired" after H.W.'s biological father was killed in a workplace accident. Eli, a preacher and faith healer, wants to use the sale of his family's farm, which contains a major oil deposit, to fund his own church. The two men's competitive natures often clash as Daniel seeks to pump oil and acquire surrounding land, while Eli tries to build his religious empire.
