Bert Kalmar, a song-and-dance man, is forced to shift his focus to songwriting after an injury, where he meets composer Harry Ruby and creates a hit song. Ruby's influence gets Kalmar to marry his former partner Jessie Brown, and together they prevent Ruby from making a series of misguided romantic mistakes. However, Ruby's actions ultimately lead to the downfall of Kalmar's play and the end of their partnership.
