In 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire, 572 people, mysteriously abandoned their homes and marched into the wilderness, leaving behind their belongings and even their dogs to starve. The U.S. Army search party found the remains of nearly 300 people, with many frozen to death and others brutally slaughtered. The fate of the remaining citizens remains unknown. Over the years, the story was covered up and became a local legend. The area has slowly repopulated, but the wilderness remains largely unexplored, with the northern stretches off-limits. In 2008, the coordinates for the "YELLOWBRICKROAD" trail head were declassified, and the first official expedition sets out to uncover the truth behind the lost citizens of Friar.
