Amistad background

Amistad

Amidst the tumultuous 1839, a group of enslaved Mende people stage a rebellion on a Spanish-owned vessel, sparking a contentious national discourse in the United States as judges struggle to determine their status: should they be viewed as slaves or liberated individuals?

A slave ship named Amistad travels from Cuba to the U.S. in 1839, carrying Africans sold into slavery in Cuba. When the ship reaches the U.S., the Africans, led by Cinque, a former African tribal leader, take control and attempt to sail back to Africa, but are misdirected and imprisoned as runaway slaves. An abolitionist lawyer takes their case to the Supreme Court, arguing that the Africans are free citizens of another country, not slaves.
