Prince Peter Karagin, a Cossack army officer, falls in love with Lydia Marakova after a chance encounter at the Balalaika cafe in St. Petersburg. He uses his influence to help her pursue a career at the opera house, unaware that she and her family are involved in a revolutionary movement. Their relationship is put to the test when the Cossacks violently disperse a rally, killing Lydia's brother, and she learns of a plot to assassinate Peter and his uncle, General Karagin, at the opera house.
