The Union Pacific Railroad is set to stretch across the American wilderness to California, but a financial opportunist named Asa Barrows seeks to profit by obstructing the project. Jeff Butler, the chief troubleshooter, must contend with Barrows' agent, the cunning gambler Sid Campeau, who is also rivaling Butler for the affections of engineer's daughter Molly Monahan.
