Julius Caesar pursues Pompey from Pharsalia to Egypt, where Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII tries to gain favor by presenting Caesar with Pompey's head. Meanwhile, Cleopatra VII hides in a rug to win Caesar's support, and the two become infatuated. Caesar declares Cleopatra Egypt's sole ruler and takes her as his mistress, and a son, Caesarion, is born.
