Cleopatra VII embarks on a perilous journey to secure her power and preserve her existence as she clashes with the relentless advance of the Roman Empire.

Julius Caesar pursues Pompey from Pharsalia to Egypt, where Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII tries to gain favor by presenting Caesar with Pompey's head. Meanwhile, Cleopatra VII hides in a rug to win Caesar's support, and the two become infatuated. Caesar declares Cleopatra Egypt's sole ruler and takes her as his mistress, and a son, Caesarion, is born.
