On the Malabar Coast in 1954, a British woman's life is transformed when her neglected husband welcomes a sickly baby into the world. Cotton Mary, a strict and Anglophile hospital aide, takes charge of the child's care and secretly nurses it with her sister, all while manipulating the mother's exhaustion and lack of support from her husband. As Mary becomes increasingly entrenched in the English household, she begins to pilfer its resources and spin outlandish tales to her own family.
