Dr. Gillespie, struggling with his health, is pushed by the hospital to hire a new assistant, but he's resistant. To deter bright young students, he sets a challenging problem in class, but three clever interns - Randall Adams, Lee Wong How, and Dennis Lindsey - surprisingly solve it. Dr. Gillespie then assigns each intern an impossible case to diagnose, with the promise that the one who succeeds will become his new assistant.
