Recently ordained, 24-year-old Father Amaro is sent to a small Mexican parish to assist the aging Father Benito. He meets Amelia, a 16-year-old girl whose devotion turns into an attraction to the priest. Amelia's mother, Sanjuanera, has been having an affair with Father Benito, who receives financial help from a drug lord to build a health clinic. Father Amaro and Amelia start a passionate relationship, but the priest's integrity is tested as corruption and the Church collide in the community.
