In the early 1960s, a middle-aged school teacher, Mrs. Mary Whitehouse, launched a campaign against what she deemed as inappropriate content on BBC television and radio. She and a friend gathered signatures, organized rallies, and faced off against the BBC's Director General, Sir Hugh Carleton Greene, who saw her as an out-of-touch busybody. Despite his dismissal, Mrs. Whitehouse persisted in her efforts until her death in 2001.
