Stewart Wright is a renowned character actor, celebrated for his remarkable versatility and extensive on-screen presence, spanning over two decades.
Born on January 12th, 1974, in Hammersmith, London, Stewart is the son of two doctors. He attended Wellington College, where he excelled in both acting and rugby, earning a place in the England U18 squad.
Stewart went on to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 1996 with a first-class BA in acting. His early film appearances included Fierce Creatures (1997) alongside John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtis, and his TV debut in Alexei Sayle's Merry-Go-Round (1998).
He gained recognition for his roles in acclaimed comedies Black Books (2000) and Smack the Pony (1999),before securing the part of Nick Levick in the BBC's award-winning mockumentary series People Like Us (1999). Stewart's subsequent roles included the lead role of Eddie Chisolm in BBC comedy drama Rescue Me (2002),opposite Sally Phillips, and PC Mark Mylow in the worldwide hit Doc Martin (2004),reprising his role for a one-off episode in 2019.
Stewart has also flourished in lead roles in Bonkers (2007) alongside Liza Tarbuck, and the highly successful Love & Marriage (2013),starring alongside Alison Steadman, Ashley Jensen, and Celia Imrie. He has acted in numerous television dramas, including Armadillo (2001),The Nightmare Worlds of H.G. Wells (2016),and Dirty Filthy Love (2004),working alongside Michael Sheen, Shirley Henderson, Ray Winstone, and Stephen Rea.
In addition to his television work, Stewart has appeared in several films, including Bridget Jones's Diary (2001),Ali G Indahouse (2002),A Good Year (2006),and Incendiary (2008). He also played Uncle Henry in Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey?! (2014),directed by Debbie Isitt, and has a lead role in the Bollywood film Jungle Cry (2022),which premiered at Cannes in 2019.
Stewart has also demonstrated his stage acting prowess, with roles as diverse as Frank Lubey in All My Sons at the National Theatre, The Prince of Wales in The Madness of George III at the Leeds Playhouse, and the Dame in Lyric Hammersmith's pantomime. He played Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream at Bristol Old Vic, where he also played seven-year-old Roger in Swallows and Amazons, which transferred to the West End.
