John Alexander, accused of self-defense murder, assumes the name Johnny Blake and travels the country as a roughneck, seeking a fresh start. He befriends oil rig foreman Hap O'Connor, who knows about the police investigation but stands by Johnny. Their friendship is tested when Hap reunites with old friend Wildcat Chalmers, who needs help digging a new well. However, their efforts are thwarted by Wildcat's archenemy, Charles Hammond, who will stop at nothing to prevent the well from being dug. As Johnny works for Hammond, he discovers his true intentions and switches sides, joining forces with Hap and Wildcat. Meanwhile, a love triangle forms between Johnny, Hap, and Wildcat's daughter Linda, who is familiar with the oil field culture. As tensions rise, Johnny's past and the well's fate threaten to disrupt the friendship and the trio's relationships.
