Daanyik, a 9-year-old Russian boy, immigrates to the US in the late 1970s with his family to pursue the American Dream. He faces harsh realities in New York City after his father's death and his mother's subsequent poverty, loneliness, and desperation. Daanyik finds comfort in drawing as he battles an abusive stepfather, a lecherous Rabbi, and a neighborhood bully. Despite his young age, he must overcome insurmountable odds to save himself and his mother from destruction.
