David MacEnulty, a teacher, inspires schoolchildren from the Bronx Community Elementary School to compete at a high level, ultimately winning local and state chess championships. Meanwhile, a substitute teacher, Richard Mason, faces a mid-life crisis and whistle-blowing, leading him to a new teaching assignment in a South Bronx school where students struggle to find purpose in school. Mason's life changes when a student discovers his chess skills and asks to learn, sparking a passion in the entire class. As they form a team, Mason teaches them that chess is a game where everyone is equal, regardless of background or circumstances.
