In 1993 Algiers, amidst the onset of civil war, Mrs Osmane's tenants suffer under her mercurial temper. Haunted by the fear of losing her social standing after her husband's departure, the former Resistance fighter becomes obsessed with controlling every aspect of her tenants' lives, diverting attention from her own frustrations. When she learns her daughter is in love, the prospect of being left alone pushes her to the brink: the fragile balance of her "harem" is about to shatter.
