Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley background

Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley

In the 1950s, a driven research chemist named Margaret Thatcher pursues her dream of becoming a Member of Parliament and meets her future husband Denis along the way.

In a post-war election, Margaret Roberts, a university-educated daughter of a shopkeeper, strives to become a Conservative party candidate, but faces rejection. Despite her friend Patricia's success, the idea of a woman candidate is met with disapproval from old-guard members like Sir John Sowdon, and she receives no support from fellow hopeful Ted Heath. Undeterred, Margaret remains committed and, with her businessman husband Dennis's loyal backing, ultimately wins a parliamentary seat a decade later, achieving her long-sought goal of "the long walk to Finchley".
