In the spotlight of New York's music scene, a small-town electrician's life takes a dramatic turn as he becomes entangled in a complex web of relationships with a cunning gold digger, a clever thief, a renowned opera singer, and the woman who truly captures his heart.

In the small town of Pewamo, Claude Dodd, an electrician with a singing baritone, is discovered by a mattress company owner and hired to sing on a radio program. Before leaving for New York, Claude has a minor operation and is told not to use his voice, but when he sings on the radio, he finds he's a tenor. His voice becomes a huge success, and he signs a contract with the radio station, falls in love with the station's secretary, Marjorie, and becomes wealthy and famous.
