In a working-class New Jersey suburb, three lifelong friends, Ray, Mike, and Butchie, navigate their complex relationships and struggles. Ray, a hardworking shoe salesman, dreams of becoming a successful businessman and marrying his childhood sweetheart, Joanne. However, his irresponsible nature leads him to borrow money from a local loan shark, Donny, and lose it in Atlantic City casinos. Meanwhile, Mike, a college student, works part-time at his father's bar and finds himself in a complicated situation with Joanne after his father's heart attack. Butchie, the troubled one, has little ambition and works as a delivery boy. The story takes a dark turn when Donny's thugs catch up with the three, leading to a violent and traumatic confrontation.
