In 1927 Paris, Marya Zelli, a woman from West India, moves in with her acquaintances, expatriate Brits H.J. and Lois Heidler, after her art-dealer husband Stephan is imprisoned for theft. Marya is unaware of H.J.'s true intentions and agrees to stay with them due to her inability to find work as a foreigner. As she settles in, she discovers that she is not the first lodger and that the Heidlers' marriage is not as perfect as it seems. When Stephan is released from jail, he struggles to regain his former life and standard of living, further complicating the lives of those around him.
