A mineralogist named Steve Carlisle is mistaken for a suspect and accused of murder after a party at the Denton ranch, where the owner, Hiram Denton, is killed. Steve and his new friend Cannonball Mullins, who was just fired by Denton's ward Jane Fielding, must clear Steve's name and uncover the truth behind the murder, which leads them to discover a surprise twist: Jane and the syndicate representative Paul Edwards are secretly married and were the ones who committed the crime to gain control of the ranch.
