In 1926 Copenhagen, Einar Wegener, a landscape painter, and his wife Gerda, a portrait artist, lead a happy life. When Einar poses for a portrait in a dress, he discovers a newfound sense of identity as a woman, Lili. As Lili, he attends a party and begins to prefer his life as a woman. Despite Gerda's initial support, their attempts to "cure" Lili's condition fail, and she eventually undergoes the first sex-change operation.
