A group of American settlers, known as the Donner Party, embarked on a perilous journey to California in the 1840s, only to become snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter of 1846-1847. As the situation grew dire, some of the stranded settlers banded together to make a last-ditch effort to reach California and send out a rescue party.
