Widowed Manbei Kohayagawa, owner of a small sake brewery in Kyoto, is struggling to find financial security for his three daughters. He arranges dates for Akiko and Noriko, hoping to secure their futures. However, both daughters are unsure if these arranged marriages are what they truly want. Akiko is content with her current life, while Noriko has a close friendship with a man she met recently. Meanwhile, Kohayagawa has rekindled a relationship with a former mistress, Sasaki, who claims to have a 21-year-old daughter that is his biological child.
