John Newberry and his wife Maria Ivar's criticisms of each other's acting spark a domestic battle, leading their manager Charles MacNulty to suggest psychiatry. Each secretly consults a doctor, with John meeting Dr. Harold Matson and Maria meeting Dr. Susan Nash. The doctors, posing as old friends and a sister, make progress with the couple, helping them discover the joy of saying nice things to each other. However, when MacNulty presents a play with unsavory characters, John and Maria refuse to play them, leading to a verbal battle and the revelation of the doctors' true identities.
