A couple, Susan and Mark, embark on a new venture by purchasing an old seaside house and transforming it into an inn. Upon arriving, Susan is inexplicably drawn to a mysterious house on a cliff overlooking a desolate beach, despite their initial intention to view a different property. As they settle into their new home, they begin to experience eerie and unsettling occurrences, including the appearance of a menacing black dog and a peculiar guest who stays at the inn. While exploring the attic, Susan discovers a series of letters written by a woman who lived in the house decades ago, revealing her terror of an unknown force. As the strange events escalate, it becomes clear that the same malevolent force that haunted the woman in the past is now affecting Susan and Mark, threatening to destroy their new life and their sanity.
