The Lotus Eaters background

The Lotus Eaters

A tranquil Canadian pig farming family's idyllic exterior gradually unravels, exposing a tangled web of underlying issues and family dysfunction.

In 1964, on one of the Gulf Islands off Vancouver, BC, the Kingswood family - Hal, Diana, and their two daughters Cleo and Zoe - are a respected family in the community. Hal is the school principal, Diana knits goods for sale, and they tend to their small farm. However, beneath the surface, problems are brewing. Flora, Hal's mother, has a long-held secret that could strain her relationship with Hal. Meanwhile, a new schoolteacher, Anne-Marie Andrews, arrives on the island, and her progressive values clash with Hal's more traditional approach. Despite this, they begin an affair, which could have devastating consequences for the family.
