The Nilssons, a Swedish family, continue their journey in the United States after leaving their native Sweden in search of a better life. The story begins in the fall of 1850, where they have just arrived in Minnesota to start their new life. Karl-Oskar, the husband, is busy setting up their homestead, while his younger brother Robert, 18, has bigger aspirations, wanting to strike it rich in the California gold rush.
