A young woman named Ursula leaves her convent education to live with her uncle, Count Ribera, and aunt Florentine. She becomes embroiled in a local drama when a villager accuses the count of murdering his sister, whom he had sexually assaulted. The count's honor is cleared through a duel, but Ursula falls in love with the accuser, Lambert, who is secretly her aunt's lover. The count discovers the affair and fights Lambert, resulting in the count's death. Ursula helps Lambert escape, but her aunt, consumed by jealousy, sets the police after him.
