In 1877, during the Russian-Turkish war, Erast Fandorin, a former prisoner, attempts to reach the Russian side to share crucial information about an impending enemy attack. Along the way, he crosses paths with Varvara Suvorova, a young woman bound for her fiancé, a Russian soldier. As Fandorin navigates his journey, he becomes aware of a spy lurking within the Russian army, casting suspicion on everyone.
