Grover Cleveland Alexander, a country hayseed from Nebraska, wants to settle down with his girlfriend Aimee and become a farmer. However, his passion for baseball keeps getting in the way. He joins a professional team, but an eye injury ends his career before it begins. He focuses on farming to please his wife, but his love for baseball never fades. When his injury heals, he's given a second chance with the Philadelphia Phillies and later the Chicago Cubs.
