Thousands of years ago, the Dark Elves attempted to destroy the universe with the Aether, but were thwarted by Asgardian warriors. The leader, Malekith, escaped and waited for another chance. In the present day, Thor tries to bring peace to the nine realms, while Jane Foster awaits his return. When Jane discovers a wormhole, she's sucked in and later reappears with the Aether inside her. Malekith senses the Aether's return and attacks Asgard, killing Thor's mother.
