In 1898, a Spanish military squad is sent to Baler, Philippines, to protect the last Spanish colony from rebellious natives. As they're stalked at night, they take refuge in a church, where they face heat, malaria, and a power struggle. After the captain's death, the new leader, Lieutenant Cerezo, becomes obsessed with winning and doesn't believe the news that Spain has sold the Philippines to the US, prolonging the battle for months.
