Jack Carter, a middle-aged bakery owner, feels disconnected from his family and wants to reconnect with them and pursue his writing career. He takes them on a Christmas vacation to a cabin resort in the mountains with no technology, but things go awry. They stay in a dilapidated cabin while his estranged friend Robert, who's rich and successful, stays in a fancy cabin. Robert's wealth and success make Jack feel like a failure, and he tries to one-up Robert at the Winter Olympics, but ultimately fails. Feeling defeated, Jack apologizes to his family for not being able to provide for them, but they reveal they think he's the best father and husband anyone could want.
