A mysterious radio message sends shockwaves around the world, landing in the hands of engineers Los and Spiridonov. Los, a free-spirited dreamer, becomes fixated on being watched by Aelita, the daughter of the ruthless Martian dictator Tuskub. After a series of events involving his wife's murder and a detective's pursuit, Los assumes Spiridonov's identity and builds a spaceship to join the revolutionary Gusev on a journey to Mars. However, the group is imprisoned by the dictator, and Aelita's offer to lead the revolution ultimately gives rise to her own totalitarian regime, leaving Los stunned and determined to stop her.
